So I spent last week in bed with something that wasn’t quite the H1N1 thing but had ALL the nasty symptoms (reading between the lines of what my doctor told me, this means I can STILL CATCH the stupid flu and end up going through all this AGAIN). All better, but I’m now faced with catching up and getting some momentum back before I hit the road for the Fergus Falls Big Read in a week and a half.

This means I have a week’s worth of my mail, a month’s worth of my Dad’s mail and financial stuff, a week’s worth of dishes and laundry, clean-up from the house guests who left JUST in time to avoid the plague, assorted housework and household errands, and a week’s worth of writing to catch up on.

You really don’t realize just how much daily life there IS until you get behind on it — at least, I don’t. And it’s going to be completely crazy through the end of November, between road trips, family business, getting the book finished, and the looming holidays. And here I thought I was being smart to schedule things for BEFORE the holidays hit…

At least I got some reading done, of which I will just mention Kelly McCullough’s Webmage (yes, I am frightfully behind; don’t rub it in), which was great fun, and the first couple of books in a trilogy that I’m not going to say more about until I finish the darned thing.  One of the few bad things about being a professional writer is that you stop having time to read. I think I’m now up to an entire wall of “to be read” books.

Enough rambling; I have catch-up to do.

  1. Sorry you suffered from the lurgy. You should have extended recouperation and read a few more books…

  2. Feel better! Good luck with the catching up and enjoy the road trip!

  3. Wow. Being sick is bad enough, without getting swamped by life. Glad you’re starting to feel better.

  4. I just finished Thirteenth Child and really loved it. I get tired of fantasy books where the main character is “the one” the prophecy has foretold who will save the world. And I liked your vision of a different America.
I read a lot of fantasy since I managed to never grow up in my reading tastes or my world view. Look forward to the next one in this trilogy.

  5. >> I can STILL CATCH the stupid flu <<

Be glad you are older and past the age where this swine flu kills.

Rereading Snow White and Rose Red. Got to say, it and Sorcery and Cecelia are two of my favorites. They are outstanding books.

  6. Glad you are feeling better. 🙂

I don’t know if it will make you feel better re being behindhand in your reading – but the newest of my books I’ve read was bought in 2004. And I’ve been buying a lot since then… which would be frustrating, of course, but that I enjoy the thought of all the wonderful books I’ve got to look forward to – like a miser gloating over his (or in my case, her) gold. (The newest of my books I read was “Ombria in Shadow” – it was gorgeous!) I’ve got four of your books on my reading-list and am looking forward to them – loved the three Enchanted Forest books I’ve read so far and have no doubt I’ll love the other books I’ve got as well (and the ones I mean to get…) 🙂

    • Thanks, all. LRK, you make me feel a little better about my to-read list, but only a little; I think I’m about six months ahead of you. 🙂

And Zuleme – if there is any saving-the-world to be done in the Frontier Magic series (which I don’t expect), or even saving-the-country, it’s going to be a team effort. Eff really doesn’t like being a heroine, not even as much of a one as she was by the end of Book 1.

  7. I’m sorry you’ve been feeling poorly, & hope you’re better soon.

Thanks for the _Webmage_ recommendation; I’ve put it on hold at the library.
